The marketing ploy used by the miss-informed retailer. High density Polyetheline (HDPE) is indeed very hard, but also very brittle. Great for garden chairs and blow molded bottles. Linear Low Density Polyethylene is used for kayaks because it isnt hard, it is malleable (bendy) and so can absorb the shock of rocks and waves. So there you are! All the best kayaks are made from LLDPE.
